The process of biodiversity offsetting has existed in Australia for several decades, yet it has rarely been applied to cultural heritage places. Here we consider whether and in what circumstances offsetting of cultural heritage impacts may be possible or appropriate.
One of the concerns voiced about offsetting for cultural heritage is that no two cultural heritage places are equivalent – each is in some way unique.

The Extent Heritage and Euclideon team were engaged by Queensland Rail to undertake an archival recording of the heritage-listed North Ipswich Railway Workshops, the first railway workshops constructed in Queensland.
The inner-western suburb of Sunshine boasts a rich and diverse working-class history that is readily evident in its impressive industrial sites. Extent Heritage was engaged by Brimbank City Council to undertake a heritage assessment of one of these sites – the Sunshine Silos.
Extent Heritage was engaged by the Australian government to prepare an archaeological zoning and management plan (AZMP) for known and potential archaeological resources within the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area (KAVHA), Norfolk Island.
Extent Heritage, and its Irish collaborators Research + Dig, were engaged by the Republic of Ireland to identify and assess the heritage attributes that combine to make Glendalough a heritage place. The aim was to assess Glendalough’s archaeological, architectural, historical and spiritual dimensions, to establish an appropriate heritage boundary, and to inform future heritage management processes, including future heritage listings.
