A customisable space to interact, learn and share
We know that heritage adds value to places and communities. But to add that value, we have to connect with our communities and stakeholders to build understanding. We know that can be a logistical challenge, especially on active project sites.
With people at the centre of everything we do, Extent Heritage has designed a portable museum that takes the complexity out of connecting with key stakeholders and the wider community. It offers an opportunity to meaningfully connect, inspire and inform people.
The Mini-museum can present the past, present and future of places in which it is installed, by taking any of a number of roles:
A secure and enclosed viewing area for archaeological excavations, enriched with static and multimedia displays
A base for community consultation
A showcase of archaeological findings and researched heritage stories for community engagement
An interesting and educational departure point for archaeology tours
A feature at cultural and community festivals to communicate a deeper understanding of place.
The Mini-museum also highlights an organisation’s commitment to heritage and community - generating social license while offering opportunities for feedback and community perception.
About the mini-museum
Our Mini-museum is the perfect solution for a temporary installation; designed within a standard container (6m x 2.4m x 2.4m) it can be lifted onto your site with a minimum of hassle and removed when your project is complete.
The facility features two large viewing windows in one side (one of which is lower for viewing by children and wheelchair users) through which visitors can view an active site. The container is designed to be easily incorporated into a secure site perimeter with the viewing window on one side and safe, public access from the other side.
The container comes pre-fitted with display cases, signage panels, an LED display and everything you need to tell the heritage story of your site. Take visitors to your site on an educational journey through simple but innovative interpretation.
Extent’s Mini-museum is a step up from other temporary display options. It is weatherproof and can be easily secured overnight - you can set up your display for the duration of your event and be confident that your display material is secure. We can also provide the information and graphic design for the Mini-museum fit-out.
CASE STUDY: WOODLEA AND ROCKBANK INN
Client: Woodlea Estate, Victoria, a masterplanned community by VIP and Mirvac
Date: May 2021
The Extent Mini-museum was delivered to the main community centre of this 7,000 property estate currently under construction as part of an event that tied in with the City of Melton Heritage Festival.
The event gave an opportunity for locals and heritage enthusiasts from abroad to learn about the history of the Rockbank Inn, a heritage listed site within the Woodlea Estate boundary.
Acting as an interpretation centre for a two week period, the Mini-museum included pictorial and written history, video displays and glass cases of artefacts found on site. It was also the departure point for heritage tours with Extent archaeologists that were booked out well before the day.
The Woodlea team also added a range of other activities such as a Kids Dig in the local playground, and sweet treats to wrap around this educational and enjoyable outing for all ages.
We love that the team at Woodlea share our appreciation of people-centred heritage, proactively engaging with the community and stakeholders in a way that builds a meaningful connection with the place in which they live. The feedback our staff received from the local residents that attended certainly demonstrated that they really value this aspect of the development.
