Sunshine Silos, Victoria
Sunshine Silos Heritage Assessment
Client: Brimbank City Council
The project
The inner-western suburb of Sunshine boasts a rich and diverse working-class history that is readily evident in its impressive industrial sites. Extent Heritage was engaged by Brimbank City Council to undertake a heritage assessment of one of these sites – the Sunshine Silos. This assessment included an evaluation of place against the HERCON criteria to determine if it met the threshold for local heritage listing, and pending the outcome of the assessment, the preparation of a heritage citation for inclusion with the planning amendment.
Our role
In assessing whether the site met the threshold for local heritage significance, our historians researched the structure’s history, our community facilitators met with local stakeholders, and our built heritage specialists identified significant attributes of its fabric, form and function. Extent Heritage also applied state government guidelines and Brimbank City Council’s planning policies to ensure that our methodology and recommendations were appropriate and considered.
Value Unlocked
Extent Heritage has provided a means to conserve an integral part of Sunshine’s rich industrial heritage. Our team ensured that the multiple layers of the complex’s history, and its many associations, were identified and communicated. Our work on this project ultimately informs the ongoing and future development that is taking place in this rapidly changing area of Melbourne.
