PEOPLE CENTRED HERITAGE // THE BURIED BLOCKS OF BENETTS LANE

We are thrilled to share this video story which presents an overview of five months of archaeological investigations in downtown Melbourne. Extent Heritage has worked with Perri Projects, Pellicano, Heritage Victoria and Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Council to uncover an entire neighbourhood of blue stone cottages, terrace houses, and yards. Every one of them tells a story about its people – from before the 1850s Gold Rush through to the 1870s. The Bennetts Lane archaeology is a reminder of the incredible landscape hidden beneath our feet – including the land that the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people occupied before colonisation.

Jim Wheeler, Director, calls it a ‘time capsule of archaeology’. To us, ‘buried blocks’ are more stories waiting to be told.
