EXTENT HERITAGE PROUDLY SUPPORTS GO FOUNDATION! Jessica's story so far...

This year, Palawa woman Jessica Henderson started a double degree at The Australian National University thanks to a GO Foundation - The Goodes O'Loughlin Foundation scholarship, proudly sponsored by Extent Heritage.

Jessica is studying a Bachelor of Art History and Curation majoring in archaeology, and a Bachelor of Classical Studies majoring in ancient history.

“At the most basic level, it means that I can come to university,” says Jessica. “I’m the first person in my family to do that. And it means that I can do what I want to do, instead of just something I have to do for money, which makes a big difference.”

GO Foundation co-founder Michael O’Loughlin says the work of the Foundation is about boosting educational opportunities for Indigenous kids. “We want to put kids into school, and see that they complete their schooling., and go on to bigger and better things,” he says, at a day of cultural activities welcoming new students, run by the ANU’s Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre. “As a young kid, I missed out on a lot of excursions and things because money was tight. So we want our students to have all the resources and the support they need to complete school.”

Jim Wheeler, an Extent Heritage Director and honorary senior lecturer at ANU’s School of Archaeology and Anthropology, says the board of Extent Heritage are very proud to be able to support the GO Foundation and Jessica’s studies.

“We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work closely with many wonderful First Nations communities in Australia and the Asia Pacific region,” says Jim. “To be able to support and help mentor young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are seeking to pursue careers in cultural heritage conservation is a real privilege. We can’t wait to see where Jessica’s career takes her in the years ahead.”

"GO is so lucky to have the support of amazing partners like Extent Heritage. We can’t do the work we do or offer opportunities to students without the corporate partners and donors who give to GO. This opportunity for Jessie at ANU means she can study what she wants to in the field she loves" Mark Heiss, Head of Scholarships.

Jessica is excited by the idea of a career in heritage. “I want to work towards preserving our heritage and our culture and our history for younger generations,” she says. “A real passion of mine is the repatriation of Indigenous artefacts from overseas.”
