Arncliffe Sewer Vent

PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVAL RECORDING

In 2015, Extent Heritage (formerly Futurepast Heritage Consulting Pty Ltd) prepared a photographic archival recording for the State Heritage–listed Arncliffe Sewer Vent.

Significance

The Arncliffe Sewer Vent, situated on West Botany Street, was historically associated with the first system of classically proportioned brick stacks that date to around the turn of the twentieth century. It was also associated with the Western Main Outfall Sewer, which originally served the Botany Sewage Farm and, later, the Southern and Western Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. Aesthetically, the stack was an excellent example of the tall brick ventilation shafts that were constructed around the same period to facilitate the efficient functioning of the major outfall sewers.

The project

In June 2015, Extent Heritage was commissioned by Metrocorp Technologies, on behalf of Sydney Water Corporation, to prepare a photographic archival recording for the State Heritage–listed Arncliffe Sewer Vent. The purpose of the report was to record the current state of the Arncliffe Sewer Vent before its demolition. The report was undertaken to comply with relevant guidelines and legislation and to serve as a permanent record of the place prior to development commencing.
