GLOBAL WATER HERITAGE - A CRITICAL BRIDGE TO PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT

The World Water Council held the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar in March 2022. Our CEO, Ian Travers was invited to present at this year's forum as President of the new ICOMOS International Scientific Committee (ISC) on Water and Heritage.

"My job today is to introduce ICOMOS and our international committee within it, and to outline what we are trying to achieve in bringing heritage managers and water managers together to inform water management and planning for the future." says Ian Travers, keynote speaker for this year's World Water Forum in Dakar.

The International Scientific Committee on Water and Heritage (ISCWH) is dedicated to the research, projection and promotion of water-related cultural heritage and its material, conceptual, political and spiritual aspects.

The committee’s aim is to progress the comprehension and dissemination of knowledge and experience about the World’s water heritage, and harness it to conserve this heritage and sustainably address the water-related challenges of the present and future.

What are the goals of the ICOMOS ISCWater?

  • Provide water managers with research-based evidence about the significance of water related cultural heritage to enhance the sustainability of water management

  • Have the significance of water related cultural heritage acknowledged as an essential contribution to enhance water related sustainable development

  • Have the significance of water related cultural heritage recognised in the progression towards fully achieving SDGs

  • Develop the narrative on the significance and conservation of cultural heritage for the future through cooperation with water professionals/organisations
